Your Safety is Our Priority

At White Africa, we work hard to keep our marketplace safe, but your personal vigilance is the most important protection. This guide covers everything you need to know to buy and sell safely on our platform.

1. Meeting in Person

The Golden Rule: Always Meet in Public

Never invite a stranger to your home, and never go to a stranger’s home alone. Choose busy, well-lit public places where other people are present.

Recommended Meeting Locations:

  • Shopping malls — Secure, busy, with CCTV cameras
  • Coffee shops / cafés — Quiet enough to inspect items, public enough to be safe
  • Banks — Ideal for high-value transactions; you can verify payment on the spot
  • Police stations — Many police stations offer “safe trade zones” specifically for online transactions
  • Fast food restaurants — McDonald’s, KFC, local chains with seating areas
  • University campuses — If you’re a student, meet near the security gate

Meeting Best Practices:

  • ✅ Meet during daylight hours — Morning or afternoon, never late night
  • ✅ Bring a friend or family member — Especially for high-value items
  • ✅ Tell someone where you’re going — Share the location, time, and buyer/seller’s contact
  • ✅ Charge your phone — Ensure you can make calls if needed
  • ✅ Park in a well-lit area — If driving, choose a spot near the entrance
  • ✅ Have an exit plan — Park facing the exit so you can leave quickly if needed
  • ❌ Don’t meet in isolated places — Empty parking lots, parks, or alleys
  • ❌ Don’t meet at your home or workplace — Protect your privacy
  • ❌ Don’t carry large amounts of cash — Use mobile money or bank transfer when possible

2. Payment Safety

Preferred Payment Methods (Safest to Riskiest):

1. Cash on Inspection (Best for Small Items)

  • Pay only after you’ve inspected the item
  • Count the money together in a well-lit area
  • Don’t flash large amounts of cash in public

2. Mobile Money / Bank Transfer

  • Verify the payment confirmation before handing over the item
  • Check your balance, not just the SMS notification (SMS can be faked)
  • For large transfers, wait 30 minutes to confirm the money has cleared

3. Escrow Services (Best for High-Value Items)

  • Buyer deposits money with a trusted third party
  • Item is shipped or handed over
  • Third party releases money to seller after buyer confirms receipt
  • Use only reputable escrow services

4. Online Payment Gateways

  • Paystack, Flutterwave, and similar services offer buyer protection
  • Use credit cards where possible (easier to dispute if something goes wrong)

Payment Methods to Avoid:

  • ❌ Western Union / MoneyGram — Almost always scams
  • ❌ Wire transfers to strangers — Untraceable and irreversible
  • ❌ Shipping items before payment — The #1 scam tactic
  • ❌ Paying “extra” for shipping with a refund promise — Classic overpayment scam
  • ❌ Cryptocurrency for local transactions — Irreversible and untraceable

Common Payment Scams:

The Overpayment Scam:
Buyer sends a fake check or mobile money notification for more than the asking price, then asks you to refund the difference. The original payment never clears.

The Fake Payment Confirmation:
Buyer shows you a fake SMS or screenshot of a payment. Always verify in your own banking app.

The “I Already Sent It” Scam:
Buyer claims to have sent money and pressures you to hand over the item before you’ve verified. Never rush — verify first.

3. Recognizing Scams and Fraud

Red Flags — When to Walk Away:

Too Good to Be True:

  • A brand new iPhone 15 Pro for ₦50,000
  • A 2024 Toyota Camry for ₦200,000
  • Luxury items at 80% below market price

Pressure Tactics:

  • “I need to buy this TODAY or I’m leaving the country”
  • “Someone else is coming in 30 minutes — decide now”
  • “I already sent the money — just ship it quickly”

Communication Red Flags:

  • Refuses to speak on the phone or video call
  • Uses generic language like “the item” instead of specifics
  • Insists on communication outside the platform immediately
  • Email addresses with free providers (gmail.com, yahoo.com) for “business deals”

Location Red Flags:

  • Seller is “traveling” but the item is “with a friend”
  • Wants you to meet at a remote location
  • Claims to be in your city but has a foreign phone number with no local alternative

The “Ship It” Request:

  • Any buyer who wants you to ship an item before payment is likely a scammer
  • Even with “tracking,” you can lose your item and never get paid

Verified vs. Unverified Users:

Feature Verified Seller Unverified Seller
IdentityGovernment ID confirmedNot verified
Trust ScoreHigherStandard
Listing PriorityBoostedNormal
Dispute ResolutionPriorityStandard

Tip: For high-value purchases, prioritize verified sellers. For items from unverified sellers, take extra precautions.

4. Protecting Your Personal Information

What to Share:

  • ✅ First name only (or a nickname)
  • ✅ General location (city or neighborhood, not exact address)
  • ✅ WhatsApp number (separate from your primary number if possible)
  • ✅ Email address (a dedicated email for selling is ideal)

What NOT to Share:

  • ❌ Home address (until absolutely necessary, and even then, only at meetup)
  • ❌ Bank account details (use mobile money or payment gateways instead)
  • ❌ BVN, NIN, SSN, or other national identification numbers
  • ❌ Passwords or OTP codes (White Africa will NEVER ask for these)
  • ❌ Family information or personal details unrelated to the transaction
  • ❌ Workplace details (if meeting at work, meet at the reception/gate)

Phone Number Privacy:

  • Consider using a second phone number for selling (Google Voice, dual SIM, or a dedicated SIM)
  • Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers if you’re not expecting one
  • Block buyers who become harassing after a transaction

5. Vehicle Safety Tips

For Buyers:

  • Inspect the vehicle thoroughly — Check engine, tires, brakes, lights, and electronics
  • Request a test drive — But be prepared to leave collateral (ID, phone) with the seller
  • Verify ownership documents — Vehicle license, insurance, custom papers (for imports)
  • Check the VIN — Verify it matches all documents and hasn’t been reported stolen
  • Get a mechanic’s inspection — Worth the ₦5,000–₦10,000 for a car worth hundreds of thousands
  • Meet at the seller’s bank — For large cash transactions, this is the safest location

For Sellers:

  • Verify the buyer’s identity — Take a photo of their ID (with their permission)
  • Don’t hand over keys until payment clears — No exceptions
  • Complete a bill of sale — Include date, price, both parties’ details, and signatures
  • Notify your insurance company — Cancel or transfer coverage after the sale
  • Remove personal items — Check glove compartment, trunk, and door pockets
  • Accompany the buyer on the test drive — Or hold their collateral

6. Property Safety Tips

For Renters / Buyers:

  • Never pay before seeing the property — Scammers often post fake listings with stolen photos
  • Verify the landlord’s identity — Ask for proof of ownership (deed, land certificate)
  • Visit the property with a friend — Don’t go alone, especially to remote areas
  • Check the neighborhood — Visit at different times of day
  • Get a written agreement — Verbal agreements are not legally binding
  • Never pay a full year’s rent upfront — Unless you fully trust the landlord and have verified everything

For Property Owners:

  • Verify the tenant’s identity and employment — Request ID and a letter from employer
  • Meet in person — Don’t rent to someone you’ve never met
  • Take a security deposit — Standard practice, usually 1–3 months’ rent
  • Inspect the property together — Document condition with photos before handover
  • Use a formal lease agreement — Protects both parties legally

7. Electronics and High-Value Items

Before Buying Electronics:

  • Test everything — Turn on the device, test all buttons, ports, and features
  • Check for iCloud / Google locks — For phones, ensure the previous owner has signed out
  • Verify IMEI numbers — Dial *#06# on the phone and check if it’s blacklisted
  • Check battery health — For phones and laptops, degraded batteries are expensive to replace
  • Ask for the original receipt — For warranty claims
  • Beware of refurbished items sold as new — Check packaging, seals, and documentation

After Purchase:

  • Factory reset the device — If buying used, ensure the seller has removed their accounts
  • Register the warranty — If transferable, register under your name
  • Check for hidden issues — Some problems (like intermittent glitches) only appear after extended use

8. What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

If You’ve Been Scammed:

  1. Gather evidence — Screenshots, messages, payment receipts, photos
  2. Report to White Africa — Use the “Report” button on the listing or contact support@white.africa
  3. Report to the police — File a report at your local police station
  4. Contact your bank — If you paid by bank transfer, report the fraud immediately
  5. Contact your mobile money provider — They may be able to freeze the recipient’s account
  6. Warn others — Share your experience in relevant communities (without doxxing the scammer)

If You Feel Threatened:

  1. Leave immediately — Your safety is worth more than any item or money
  2. Call the police — Dial emergency services (112 in Nigeria, 999 in Kenya, 10111 in South Africa)
  3. Contact White Africa support — We can suspend the user’s account and cooperate with authorities
  4. Document everything — Note the time, location, and any identifying details

If an Item is Defective:

  1. Contact the seller immediately — Most issues can be resolved amicably
  2. Document the defect — Take photos and videos
  3. Reference the listing description — If the seller misrepresented the item, you have grounds for a refund
  4. Escalate to White Africa — If the seller refuses to cooperate, report the listing
